Soviet cars from an alternate universe

These concept cars can be attributed to the object of an alternative history, a kind of fantasy on how the auto industry of Soviet Russia could look like if it had not ceased to exist for a number of reasons.

1. The new GAZ M20 Pobeda, like the old Pobeda, also had to have an off-road version that would allow you to move comfortably and outside the equipped highways and highways. GAZ M72-2, however, appeared somewhat earlier than the newly revived original model and, unlike its 1955 progenitor, it did not have a single external resemblance to the standard version. The development of the car was actively carried out from 1988 to 1990, the first experimental batches just came out in 1990, exactly 6 years before the appearance of the passenger version. The first generation car was equipped with an all-wheel drive transmission with a plug-in all-wheel drive, which was later replaced by a permanent one, was equipped with all kinds of electronically controlled locks, and an off-road body kit was available as one of the basic options. As for power plants, diesel engines of different capacities and configurations turned out to be a priority. The model was on the assembly line until 1999, four years earlier, the M72 40th Anniversary Edition, available in all markets and representing a deep restyling of the crossover, appeared in the lineup. In this configuration, the navigation system from Pobeda became available, dual-zone, instead of the usual Pobeda, climate control, the front seats received a massage function as a standard option, and an experimental hybrid power plant was additionally introduced, which was a bunch of gasoline RPD, with a volume of 1.8 and a power 120 HP and an electric motor with a capacity of 106 hp. A new generation of the car appeared in 2000.
2. The first generation of the GAZ 11-80 Pobeda car, the concept of which was presented at the end of 1992, appeared in 1996, this model was supposed to be the first entry-level car for the GAZ automobile plant, occupying a niche between the more cheaper Moskvitches and Ladas and the more prestigious Volga, while displacing imported cars of a similar class. Also, the engineers and designers were faced with the task of reviving the legendary car. To do this, already in 1993-94, the full-scale development of the first prototypes, the running of components and assemblies, and the first crash tests began. The tests were passed quite quickly and without any complaints about the car, in 1995 the first experimental batch of cars in 100 pieces saw the light, 60 cars of which fell into the hands of the developers themselves. As in the case of the first copies of the original Pobeda, in addition to the 11-80 index inherited from the prototype of 1944, a number of problems were inherited: the owners of cars from the experimental batch noted a very mediocre build quality and not always correctly working electronics. However, a year before the full-scale launch into production, all these problems were quickly resolved and the cars of 1996 were received extremely positively by the new owners, many automotive publications of those years conducted comparative tests in which the new Pobeda was compared with the Opel Vectra B, Audi A4 and Mercedes w202, the comparison rarely ended in favor of the latter. The car was produced from 1996 to 2002, until the appearance of the second generation in the same 2002, and from 2003 to 2006, in a greatly simplified configuration for the budget segment of the market, the first generation car began to be produced in Poland under the name FSO New Warszawa.
Other designations: GAZ New Victory (1996-1998), GAZ 20 (after restyling in 1998).
Unfortunately, as already mentioned at the very beginning, for a number of economic and geopolitical reasons at the end of the 20th century, this interesting project could only appear in an alternative universe.
3. GAZ 12-2 "ZIM" 1988. This is what the revived GAZ 12 could look like if it appeared in a world where the Soviet "premium" did not fall victim to the perestroika's "struggle with privileges." Futuristic Japanese-style design, new and rather provocative design and technical solutions for this primordially conservative type of car, including “blind” headlights, a fully steerable chassis and diesel engines, frameless doors that hide the middle pillar of the body, all this was accepted by potential owners pretty cool at first, but due to the high quality of equipment and assembly, design advantages, as well as a very successful sports weight distribution, this car still managed to firmly occupy its niche, not only thanks to the loud name inherited from its ancestor. On the international market, the model became a competitor for the Audi 200, Opel Omega A, Mercedes w124, BMW e34, Mitsubishi Sigma, Citroen XM, at the same time displacing the freshly released premium Lexus brand. But still, the peak of popularity was short-lived - by 1991, sales of this "futuristic" sedan dipped heavily for a number of reasons, the next 1992 began already without the first generation GAZ 12-2...
As mentioned earlier, 1992 passed already without the first generation GAZ 12-2, however, the GAZ management managed to note a significant reduction in the sales of the model in most markets and begin developing the next generation GAZ 12-2 at the end of the first half of 1991. In fact, no significant changes were made to the very design of the car, which at that time was quite advanced, the main components and chassis were only finalized and freed from the problems discovered over the years of production. Global changes affected the appearance of the car, it was made more restrained and more in line with the ideas of buyers about cars of this class, however, at the same time, the car began to look much more modern, because the main reason for the rapid fading of the popularity of the first generation was just a sharp change in automotive fashion, which designers had a hard time keeping up with. Together with the renewal of the exterior, it was possible to significantly increase the volume of the interior, there was a lot of space in the back and in the front in the original model, in the new car there was incomparably more space, the platform, thanks to the re-calculations, revealed more potential. At the same time, it was possible to raise the level of passive safety, which continued to remain high even some time after the end of the production of cars. Production started almost immediately after the "finishing touches", ie. at the beginning of 1993. The designers managed to create a truly "long-playing" appearance, the second generation was produced until the end of 2000, while experiencing subtle, but very frequent facelifts by the standards of the 90s, which allowed the model to continue to compete with almost any new premium class models that appeared during the period. from 1993 to 2000. The popularity of the car continued after 2000, so small-scale pre-order assembly of this generation continued until 2003.

4. So, ZIS 110.2 is a large and monumental, large-sized liftback (!) based on the Soviet sedan of the 40s. This time, this car occupies a step between the business and executive class, with the help of a 6.8-liter U-shaped 12-cylinder engine, a huge number of systems that can ensure the safety and comfort of all persons inside, restrained, moderately conservative, but at the same time, a modern exterior design, an impressive range of body types for this model: liftback, station wagon and their elongated, armored and off-road versions, as well as coupe, convertible and landau. Also, this ZIL (yes, ZIL) is called ZIS, as the legal successor of the legendary ancestor.
The development of the car was carried out from 1995 to 1997, quite quickly, given the number of possible modifications, for a car created literally from scratch. In addition to the old features re-embodied in a modern body, new rims with a rather unusual design for this type of car were added. The red flag badge that used to be on the bonnet has been moved back to give it a practical as well as aesthetic function - now it's a third brake light. On station wagons, it had to be placed on the roof above the rear door.
The car was produced from 1997 to 2007, having gone through two major restyling, and of course, in addition to them, there were other, less noticeable design changes.
